Hope is a plan. أمل
Amal — the Arabic word for hope — is an early-prevention program for Alzheimer's disease and dementia, built for the Chaldean community of Metro Detroit. The science now says what our grandparents always believed: how we move, eat, gather, and care for each other shapes how our minds age.
Prevention that's proven, not promised
Amal follows the playbook of the largest lifestyle-prevention trials ever run — Finland's landmark FINGER study and its American successor, the U.S. POINTER trial — adapted to our community, our language, and our table.
The evidence, plainly: the two-year U.S. POINTER trial (over 2,000 at-risk adults aged 60–79, results published in 2025) showed that a structured program of exercise, brain-healthy eating, cognitive and social engagement, and health monitoring improved cognition significantly more than going it alone — confirming what Finland's FINGER study first demonstrated a decade earlier. And the Lancet Commission now estimates that nearly half of dementia cases worldwide are linked to risk factors we can act on.
The four pillars of Amal
The same four domains the research tested — delivered together, in community, the way they work best.
Move
Group exercise built for every level — aerobic, strength, and balance classes, walking groups, and movement you'll actually look forward to.
Nourish
The MIND diet, adapted to the Chaldean table — the dishes we grew up with, tuned by dietitians toward the foods that protect the brain.
Engage
Cognitive challenge and real social connection — classes, games, conversation, and purpose. Isolation is a risk factor; community is the antidote.
Monitor
Regular tracking of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, hearing, and sleep — the vascular and metabolic numbers that quietly shape brain health.
A model with a Detroit precedent
Inspired by a champion
Metro Detroit has already seen this model work. The Kirk Gibson Foundation — founded by the Tigers legend after his own Parkinson's diagnosis — built a community wellness model for Parkinson's: exercise, programs, and belonging under one roof. Amal adapts that blueprint to Alzheimer's and dementia prevention.
Built for our community
Metro Detroit is home to one of the largest Chaldean communities in the world outside Iraq. Amal meets it where it lives:
- Programming in English, Sureth, and Arabic
- Family-centered — spouses and adult children welcome
- Rooted in Oakland and Macomb counties Placeholder
- Faith- and culture-aware, always
Hope starts early. So does prevention.
The research is clear: the best time to protect your memory is years before anything feels wrong. Join Amal's founding cohort and be part of bringing this to our community.
